چکیده

We discuss the coupling between flow and other hydrodynamic variables that can occur in the optically isotropic tetrahedratic phase (T d) characterized by a third rank tensor order parameter T ijk. We point out that an applied electric field or an applied temperature gradient will lead to flow. Reciprocally we predict that, for example, a shear flow applied to a tetrahedratic phase leads to an induced electric field and a temperature gradient. Similarities to recent experimental observations in the vicinity of the isotropic-B7 phase transitions in materials formed by banana-shaped molecules are discussed.

Deformable tetrahedratic phases: the effects of external fields and flows.

We discuss changes in the symmetry and physical properties of an isotropic phase which has initially tetrahedral symmetry characterized by four unit vectors. In its undeformed state, these four vectors are at the tetrahedral angle (109.47 degrees) to each other. We find that this optically isotropic phase becomes uniaxial under the influence of an external electric field, E, resulting in a phas...

Observation of a possible tetrahedratic phase in a bent-core liquid crystal.

An experimental study of the heat capacity, mass density, magnetic-field-induced optical birefringence, linewidth and intensity of scattered light, and the viscosities associated with nematic order parameter fluctuations and fluid flow has been performed on an achiral bent-core liquid crystal above its clearing point temperature. The measurements reveal a transition between two optically isotro...

Selected Macroscopic Consequences of Tetrahedratic Order

We discuss for tetrahedratic phases a number of cross-coupling terms not considered before and we analyse their macroscopic physical consequences. In particular we show that if a tetrahedratic phase is acted on by an electric field that is perpendicular to a temperature gradient, an electric current perpendicular to both forces results. We also demonstrate that spatial variations of the tetrahe...

Chiral symmetry breaking in bent-core liquid crystals.

By molecular modeling we demonstrate that the nematic long-range order discovered in bent-core liquid-crystal systems should reveal further spatially homogeneous phases. Two of them are identified as a tetrahedratic nematic (N_{T}) phase with D_{2d} symmetry and a chiral tetrahedratic nematic (N_{T};{ *}) phase with D2 symmetry. These phases were found for a lattice model with quadrupolar and o...

Polymer-stabilized optically isotropic liquid crystals for next-generation display and photonics applications

Polymer-stabilized optically isotropic liquid crystals, including blue phases, are emerging as a strong contender for next-generation display technology because they exhibit some revolutionary features such as no need for surface alignment, submillisecond response time, isotropic dark state, and cell gap insensitivity. The basic material properties, including electric field-induced birefringenc...
